Behind the Scenes: Scaling the Hallmark Christmas Cruise Experience

In 2024, Hallmark Media, in partnership with Sixthman (a division of Norwegian Cruise Lines), tasked Breakthrough Productions with an ambitious mission: create an immersive, branded Christmas experience at sea. The twist? We had just four hours between cruises to transform a ship into a holiday wonderland—while keeping it safe, modular, and camera-ready for a reality TV production.


2024: Rising to the Challenge

The inaugural cruise activation was a test of precision, creativity, and logistics. Our team had to:

  • Build a fully immersive, Christmas-themed environment in just hours

  • Ensure every element was safe and compliant for life at sea

  • Design modular sets that could be quickly assembled, disassembled, and reset

  • Keep the normal cruise operations flowing smoothly

  • Deliver the high-quality experience Hallmark audiences expect

We engineered custom crates for scenic assets that fit the ship’s elevators and could withstand movement at sea. Working closely with onboard and sailing crews, we executed a seamless setup and breakdown process. The result was a sold-out, immersive holiday experience that delighted guests and looked perfect on camera.


2025: Scaling Up

After the success of 2024, Hallmark challenged us to do it bigger. The 2025 cruise moved to the largest ship in their fleet—almost doubling guest capacity and logistical complexity. Our new challenges included:

  • Adapting and rebranding existing assets to fit Hallmark’s updated theme

  • Designing additional scenic elements to fill the expanded space

  • Maintaining modularity and efficiency despite more complex logistics (three trucks instead of two)

  • Transforming the ship again within the same tight turnaround window


To meet these demands, we took a two-pronged approach:

  1. Repurpose & Rebrand: Existing scenic pieces were refreshed to match the new theme.

  2. Expand Thoughtfully: New elements were designed and placed strategically to maintain the immersive experience.

Every asset was meticulously documented, loaded, and staged to ensure fast, accurate setup. Despite the larger scale, we delivered a seamless transformation that matched the magic of the original cruise—just bigger and better.


The Takeaway

From 2024 to 2025, the Hallmark Christmas Cruise grew from a challenging inaugural run into a fully scaled, signature holiday experience at sea. The project highlighted our ability to combine creativity, precision logistics, and modular design to deliver immersive entertainment—even under extreme time constraints.
